4 Situations In Which Your COVID 19 Health Insurance Claim Can Get Denied

The rising number of COVID 19 cases has drawn attention to the need for health insurance, especially among those who do not already have coverage. Keeping this need in mind, the IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) launched two health insurance products that are specific to offering coverage for the treatment of COVID 19. These two health insurance policies are Corona Kavach Policy and Corona Rakshak Policy.

The Corona Kavach Policy is an indemnity-based insurance plan that covers treatment for COVID 19 at a hospital or even at home, under a valid claim. The Corona Rakshak Policy is a benefit-based plan that pays the policyholder a lump sum under a valid claim. This payout can be used for any expenses arising due to COVID 19 treatment.

Now, the Corona Kavach Policy and Corona Rakshak Policy are two new types of health insurance plans. Therefore, it is important that one understands the complete detail of coverage. This will help to avoid any confusions at the time of a claim. It is especially necessary to know limitations of coverage as all health insurance products do come with a share of exclusions. With that in mind, here is a look at 4 situations in which your COVID 19 insurance claim may get denied.

      Duration of hospitalisation

The Corona Kavach Policy requires that the patient be hospitalised for at least 24 continuous hours to make a valid claim. The Corona Rakshak Policy requires that the patient be hospitalised for at least 72 continuous hours before claiming the lump sum payout. If you are hospitalised for a shorter duration, your claim will not hold.

      Diagnosis prior to policy commencement

The Corona Kavach and Corona Rakshak Policies both have a waiting period of 15 days each. This means that if you already have been diagnosed with COVID 19, you cannot purchase either policy and immediately make a claim. If you do so, it will get rejected. Also, if you buy either policy and immediately get diagnosed with COVID 19, you still cannot make a valid claim until the waiting period of 15 days are up.

      Day care treatment and OPD

The Corona Kavach Policy will not cover you for OPD or day care procedures. As the Corona Rakshak Policy pays you a lump sum amount, you may use the payout as required.

Travel history

A claim made under the Corona Kavach Policy or Corona Rakshak Policy will get denied if the policyholder travels to any country that the Indian Government has placed a travel restriction on. Some insurance companies may even reject a claim if the insured person has travelled to some of the countries that have been worst-hit by the pandemic.

Finally, do note that the Corona Kavach and Corona Rakshak Policies will only honour your health insurance claims if you provide honest and accurate information when buying either of the plans.

The COVID 19 pandemic shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Therefore, make sure to protect yourself and your loved ones with proper health insurance. Take care and stay safe.
